Great Backyard Bird Count
Saturday, February 15, 2020
Experienced birders will be conducting a center-wide winter bird survey as part of the largest instantaneous snapshot of global bird populations, the Great Backyard Bird Count. Additional volunteers of all birding skill levels are needed to join the survey groups that morning, to listen and point out birds that might otherwise be missed. A special walk for families, including a scavenger hunt for little ones will also be offered. Register
Spring Trail Day
Saturday, March 21, 2020
Help us prepare our woodland trails for visitors and spring school field trips. This is a great day to come out with family and friends. There are tasks appropriate for all ages. We will be mulching the Farm to Bay trail, clearing debris off of the wooden bridges along the trail tidying up and replacing trail liners, and pruning and clipping as needed. Register
5th Annual Seed and Plant Swap
Saturday, April 18, 2020
Get ready for Earth Day during our 5th Annual Plant and Seed Swap at Pickering Creek. The public is invited to come out and share their garden treasures with others by bringing along plants and seeds to share. Pickering will host several activities highlighting the value of native plants in healthy yards and wild landscapes. Volunteers are needed to assist with plant giveaways and activities at the Pickering display table, gardening in the Byron, settlers, and entrance gardens, and leading informal tours to highlight native plants found in those spaces. We can also use the extra hands both before and during the plant swap to prep and care for native plant seedlings we plan to give away during the swap. Register
Climate Watch Birding Survey
Saturday, May 16, 2020
8:00 AM -11:00 AM
Help Audubon learn more about how birds are responding to climate change by participating in Pickering Creek Audubon Center’s Climate Watch Survey day. Climate Watch aims to document species’ responses to climate change by having volunteers in the field look for birds where Audubon’s climate models project they should be in the 2020s. Join our team of bird watchers who work together to document specific species of birds during the three-hour survey period. We’ll be van or carpooling to each of the survey points. Bird watchers of all levels of skill and experience are welcome. Register
E-bird monitoring, led by an experienced birder, takes place on the third Monday each month. A census of birds taken on those days is recorded on the e-Bird site and used to accumulate an historical record of bird species and numeracy—and to provide Pickering with a specific record of its bird populations, especially important as we increase wetland habitat. Volunteers are needed to assist the leaders by spotting birds and assisting in the recording of data
